John Cabot House
This refined brick mansion, one of the first in the region, was built for John Cabot, the area’s wealthiest businessman. Cabot was a merchant, owner of many privateer vessels, and co-founder of America’s first cotton mill. George Washington visited this house in 1789 during his tour of the New England states. In 1802 Cabot, his brothers, and other investors formed the Beverly Bank with privateer capital. One of the oldest independent banks in the country still operating, its original office has been recreated in the home’s north rooms, which Cabot sold to the bank and from where it operated until 1868.
