George Peabody House Museum
George Peabody was born in this modest wooden Federal period house in 1795, when the city of Peabody was still part of South Danvers. Although its chronology is unclear, the house was most likely built around 1794 by Daniel Purinton, who sold his property to Peabody’s father, Thomas, the following year. George Peabody became an international merchant and financier, benefactor of numerous philanthropies and cultural institutions both in the United States and England, and the first American to be named honorary citizen of London. In 1868, the town was named for him and incorporated as a city in 1916. Today, George Peabody’s restored house is a cultural center with exhibits on Peabody and the city’s history as a tanning and shoe making industrial center.
